2010

My first post in a few weeks. And the first day of the new year, too! May this year be productive in all its forms (academic/social/romantic/bicycling).

My girlfriend has purchased a Raleigh Rush Hour 2010 model. It’s a gorgeous bicycle and will be perfect for inner-city riding as it’s both a singlespeed and capable of fixed gear riding as well. I like how Raleigh designed a bicycle that isn’t a walking billboard (such as those from Cannondale, Cinelli, and Bianchi).

So I’m still saving money. Not sure what new bike I’m going to get yet —– I am enjoying the idea of a Kona Paddy Wagon or a Surly Streamroller. And of course, the Cinelli Vigorelli.

The new term starts in just three days. I’m not very excited about it. Yet, I must do better than I did last term.

Change of plans…

So I’ve been thinking about the possibility of getting a different bike entirely instead of the Cinelli Vigorelli. I still absolutely want this Cinelli but I am having some problems with committing to it. I need a geared bike. I need a bike I can tour with (Portland to San Francisco). I need a bike that doesn’t cost as much as the Cinelli because I want to have a good standard of living in the meantime I save. This leaves me with these possibilities: The Surly Cross-Check or Long Haul Trucker.

Lately it’s been in the low 20’s throughout the night and not much higher during the day. This isn’t great riding weather…& tonight I slipped on some ice. Thankfully wasn’t going too fast or it would have been worse. I believe I strained my wrist, I can rotate it pretty well without an increase in pain, so I lucked out hopefully by not breaking it.

Cycling specific clothing

I LOVE Cyclelogical t-shirts. Looks like their prices have gone down a bit which means I’m going to save some money and get some new clothes.

And Outlier makes a great looking merino wool hoodie but I would be insane to spend $225 on it.  Maybe if I win some money on a scratch ticket ;-)

World News: Cyclist shot, bikes for Africa, and PETA

leave a comment »

If you shoot a cyclist in the head, how many days in jail are you looking at in North Carolina? 120 days. This is outrageous!

In Africa, a bicycle is not just a bicycle. It can be used as a school bus, a water van, and even an ambulance.  Cadbury (a chocolate company apparently) is donating 5000 bicycles to Ghana, Africa. Really cool 1 minute Youtube video.

And count on PETA to make a fuss about Thanksgiving.

In personal news: On the 30th of this month I get my first paycheck. It won’t be anything grand, but, it is a start for my savings (and better eating — hopefully).

What to do?

I‘m stuck. I really want the Cinelli Vigorelli that I described on post #1. The issue I’m having is that I have always wanted to do long distance touring by bicycle. In the summer of 2010 I’d like to cycle Portland to San Francisco via the Pacific Coast Highway. This would be impossible to do on the Cinelli because it is the wrong bike for the task :-( For such a ride, I’d need a touring bicycle designed to carry a heavy load (tent, food, supplies).

I’m thinking about saving for the following instead of the Cinelli Vigorelli:

1) Surly Long Haul Trucker $1095

2) Kona Sutra $1199

What should I do? Right now I’m leaning towards picking up a touring bike —,  so the Cinelli would be on hold until a further date. There are two benefits to picking up a touring bike:  I would have the correct bicycle for a trip I have wanted to do for a number of years and the bike is about $1000 cheaper than the Cinelli. This extra cash would mean I wouldn’t be suffering nearly as bad in terms of food (my goal was to eat frozen pizza and top ramen for 4 months to get the Cinelli).

My dream bicycle: I Must Save Money!

leave a comment »

This is my first post. By good fortune I have finally found a job! This will mean I can eat my favorite foods and save for my bicycle. Here is what I want: Cinelli Vigorelli frameset, 54cm. 1420gram (frame)/560gram (fork). $850. Deda Elementi Newton handlebar. 208gram. $100-135. (And for the handlebar stem I will be using a Deda Newton 31 @ 125 gram and $56). Cinelli Vai seatpost. 290grams, $40. I’m thinking about getting a post in the 190-215 gram range but it might cost too much. I’m up for any suggestions! Selle Italia Gel. 255 grams, $105. Mavic Ellipse track. 1850 grams, $550. Campagnolo Record Track. 550grams, $379. Campagnolo Record bottom bracket. 220grams, $149. Anyway, I will spend more time tweaking components/making sure things are compatible. I’m trying to keep this build under $2200. Currently I have the following saved: $0.00 but this will change very shortly. I want this bike to weigh less than 15 pounds once it’s completely built up. Anyone think this is possible with my budget? This is what the bike would look like built up (roughly, not the same components listed above).
